Personal Description:
Sarah graduated with a first class degree and performance diploma from the Royal Northern College of Music and Manchester University where she studied the flute as a scholarship student with Richard Davies (BBC Philharmonic), Linda Verrier and Jo Boddington (Hallé).
As a committed and passionate chamber musician, Sarah is a member of The Sterling Trio (flute, clarinet and piano) with whom she has performed throughout the UK since 2006, including giving recitals in London at St. James’s Piccadilly, St. Martin-in-the-Fields and Queen Elizabeth Hall, for Leeds International Concert Season, the Association of European Conservatoires and for the Concordia Foundation. Sarah also plays in the Da Capo Duo (flute and classical guitar), which, since 2003, has given over 100 concerts for many of Britain’s music clubs and societies including Oundle International Festival and Lake District Summer Music. The Duo was also part of the prestigious Countess of Munster’s Recital Scheme.
Freelance performing work frequently includes performing with orchestras (British Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, the London Mozart Orchestra and Skipton Camerata) as well as music theatre companies (Action Transport Theatre Company, the New Vic Youth Theatre, the Arden Theatre School, Oldham Theatre Workshop and Una Voce Opera) and working with larger organisations including Up North and the BBC Summer Proms. Sarah has also performed at the Houses of Parliament as well as being filmed for the Real Housewives of Cheshire!
Tutoring Experience:
Significant teaching experience for over 20 years, having worked with pupils of all ages and abilities throughout Manchester in schools, privately and for various music services. I work for the RNCM and Chethams School of Music, have taught on the course 'Flute Kitchen', for Yorkshire Young Musicians (Leeds and Hull), at the RNCM Junior School, and am flute teacher at Bangor University.
I teach pupils of all abilities from complete beginners to LRSM students.
Lessons can be simply for fun and learning a new skill, or can be focussed on reaching a specific goal. Many of my pupils enter ABRSM exams, local and national competitions and play in local ensembles. I also organise a concert each year in which I encourage all of my pupils to play.
I also have a number of flutes available for pupils to hire.

Tutoring Approach:
I am a flexible and committed teacher, aiming to find varied approaches which suit the individual student. I aim to teach holistically, incorporating performance, instrumental technique, stylistic awareness, history, aural and theory into lessons, ensuring pupils have a broad and well-rounded musical experience and education.
I am friendly, patient and committed, and aim to foster in students the idea of a joint responsibility for improvement between myself and them. Through setting and maintaining high standards, I encourage my students to fulfil their potential, and my pupils have consistently excellent exam results.
